The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Delta State’s accountant-general, Joy Enwa, as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged N1.3 trillion fraud tied to the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed Enwa’s detention on Thursday, stating that she was questioned and later released. According to Oyewale, the investigation centers on the alleged mismanagement of state funds during Okowa’s tenure, with multiple high-ranking officials under scrutiny.

“Mrs. Enwa was detained for questioning over the ongoing investigation into the mismanagement of state funds under the former administration. Some other government officials have also been interrogated,” Oyewale said.

The probe follows the November 4 arrest of Okowa, who is accused of diverting N1.3 trillion, including portions of the 13 percent derivation funds allocated to oil-producing states. Allegations suggest that the funds were used to acquire properties in Abuja and Asaba, the Delta state capital.

In addition to Enwa, the EFCC has interrogated other officials connected to the alleged fraud, including a former director of finance and administration as well as a senior government house official.

Okowa has denied the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated. He has called for a transparent investigation, asserting his commitment to accountability during his tenure. However, the EFCC has intensified its efforts to trace the flow of funds and recover any assets tied to the alleged fraud.

The case highlights the growing focus on anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria, especially in states receiving substantial revenue from oil derivation funds. Observers are closely watching the outcome, as it may set a precedent for accountability in the management of public funds.
