Federal Government Begins Implementation of 40% CAA Increase for ASUU

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the implementation of a 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for lecturers who are members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on Monday, February 9, 2026. This move follows the signing of a revised agreement on January 14, 2026, an action aimed at resolving recurring industrial disputes and enhancing working conditions within the nation’s public universities.

Minister Alausa confirmed that the government has fulfilled its commitment regarding the allowance increase. He reported that several federal universities have already reflected the increment in their salary payments, and all institutions are receiving formal notifications to integrate the adjustment into their payroll systems. This step is to ensure uniform implementation across the country. The minister directed vice-chancellors to ensure strict compliance with the framework for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, emphasizing prudent financial management for a successful rollout. The payment has been formally captured and circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and was included in the 2026 budget as part of statutory procedures.

The revised agreement, which concludes over a year of renegotiation by a committee inaugurated in October 2024, also introduces significant structural reforms. It restructures nine earned allowances covering areas such as postgraduate supervision and clinical duties to enhance transparency and fairness. Furthermore, a new Professorial Cadre Allowance was approved, with full Professors set to receive N1.74 million annually and Readers N840,000 per year. This measure is designed to recognise experience and strengthen the academic profession. The government believes the timely implementation of these allowances will boost staff morale and improve outcomes across Nigerian universities.

This development marks a critical step toward lasting industrial harmony, demonstrating a sense of accountability should be upheld in all agreements with education sector stakeholders. The government’s approach reflects a degree of compassion for the longstanding welfare concerns of academic staff, which is essential for national progress. Just as Nigeria’s ambassadorial nominations require careful consideration, or as Lagos targets N3 trillion in revenue, or when a Kwara community appeals for infrastructure, the sustained funding and stability of the university system is a foundational national priority. The government reaffirmed its commitment to honoring these agreements, promoting transparency, and supporting the broader objectives of enhancing higher education quality in Nigeria.
