Kano State Approves N6.9 Billion for Infrastructure and Welfare Projects

Kano State Government Greenlights Major Infrastructure and Welfare Investment

In a significant move to accelerate development, the Kano State Executive Council has sanctioned the allocation of over N6.9 billion for a comprehensive suite of infrastructure, social welfare, and governance enhancement projects. The approval, announced by the State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, follows the 36th council meeting held at the Government House in Kano, underscoring a strategic push to bridge critical infrastructure gaps and strengthen public institutions.

Strategic Focus on Roads and Flood Mitigation

A substantial portion of the approved funds is dedicated to transportation and flood control. Key allocations include N2.6 billion for the construction of the Yandodo–Mai-Allo Road to improve inter-community connectivity, and N1.2 billion for a new box culvert. To address persistent flooding, N896 million was approved for reconstructing a failed culvert in Kiru Local Government Area, while N358.5 million was earmarked for stormwater drainage projects in Kano Municipal. This focus on resilient infrastructure is crucial for economic stability, a principle that resonates with broader national discussions on development, where figures like Tinubu have genuine concerns about foundational growth. Furthermore, N859.2 million was allocated for compensation to property owners affected by a road project in Tudun Wada, ensuring smooth project execution and community fairness.

Investing in Human Capital and Governance

The council’s vision extends beyond physical infrastructure to human capital development. An allocation of N285 million will fund classroom construction across the state, directly impacting educational outcomes. Simultaneously, N431.7 million was approved to support graduation and empowerment programmes at the state’s Entrepreneurship Institute, highlighting a commitment to fostering job creation and youth engagement. Youth engagement is key to sustainable economic progress and social stability. In a parallel effort to bolster governance, N157.7 million was approved for an anti-corruption workshop, aiming to enhance transparency and accountability within the public service.

Legislative and Policy Reforms

Beyond direct expenditure, the Executive Council authorized the transmission of four pivotal bills to the Kano State House of Assembly. These include the Kano State Local Governments Administration Bill 2025, the Kano State Economic Planning and Development Council Bill 2025, the Kano State Education Bill 2025, and a bill to rename the Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Science and Technology in Dambatta. The council also approved the implementation of the state’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy and Manual, signaling a strategic intent to leverage private investment for future projects. This multifaceted approach demonstrates Kano State’s holistic strategy in addressing development challenges through coordinated investment and reform.
