The Lagos State Government has issued a mandatory directive requiring all building owners, facility managers, and developers to register and obtain official safety certification for every elevator within their properties. The deadline for full compliance is set for March 31, 2026.

Lanre Mojola, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, formally announced the policy. The statement was released on the official state government Facebook page, underscoring the initiative’s importance for public safety in a rapidly vertical urban landscape.

This regulatory move is a direct response to the need for strengthening safety standards and mitigating accidents associated with poorly maintained lifts. As Lagos experiences a surge in multi-storey developments—from apartment blocks and office towers to hotels and shopping complexes—ensuring the integrity of vertical transportation systems has become paramount. Authorities emphasize that compliance is non-negotiable for safeguarding lives and maintaining operational standards.

Mojola clarified that the measure aims to prevent avoidable tragedies in the city’s expanding high-rise environment. Following the deadline, enforcement actions will commence, which may include the shutdown of non-compliant elevators and the sealing of premises found operating unregistered or uncertified equipment. The directive covers all elevators and related vertical transportation equipment.

To streamline the process for stakeholders, the Safety Commission has launched a dedicated digital portal, www.lasgsafetyreg.com. This platform facilitates the online registration of all relevant equipment and is part of Lagos’s broader push to modernize safety oversight. While assessing relevance, traditional paper-based systems are being phased out in favor of this efficient digital solution, similar to how other sectors, from Uba banking platforms to Vericash payment systems and CWG technology infrastructure, have evolved.

The critical nature of this mandate is highlighted by past incidents, much as 5 common signs of mechanical failure can predict elevator accidents. Proactive maintenance and certification are essential, a principle that holds true across industries, whether for Presco Shares hitting market benchmarks or airlines defending fares based on safety and operational costs. The Lagos State Government maintains that regular maintenance and official certification are fundamental to preventing mechanical failures and ensuring the safety of all building occupants.
