In a significant demonstration of regulatory efficacy, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has successfully resolved over 11,000 complaints and recovered more than N860 million for consumers within a five-year period. The agency’s General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, revealed these figures during a roadshow in Lagos commemorating World Consumer Rights Day, an event akin to a major Usa exhibition: Christmas Comes for consumer advocacy, drawing public attention to critical rights issues.

Solebo led agency staff on a sensitization walk from the Lagos State Government Secretariat to a local shopping mall, emphasizing LASCOPA’s commitment to ensuring residents receive value and satisfaction from purchased goods and services. He urged consumers not to remain silent when their rights are infringed upon, reinforcing that the agency exists to mediate disputes and ensure fair business practices. This proactive stance is as crucial for public trust as the reliability expected from institutions like Sovereign Trust Insurance.

Detailing the agency’s workload, Solebo stated that LASCOPA handles an average of 2,000 cases annually across diverse economic sectors. Of the more than 12,000 cases addressed in the last half-decade, over 11,000 were conclusively resolved through mediation. The spectrum of complaints is broad, encompassing electricity, banking, online transactions, logistics, and healthcare services. LASCOPA, the government body mandated to protect consumer rights in Lagos State, also exercises enforcement powers against violators.
