Federal High Court Grants N1.5bn Bail to Former AGF Malami in N8.7bn Laundering Case

Court Grants N1.5 Billion Bail to Former AGF Malami, Family in High-Profile Money Laundering Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail set at N1.5 billion to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, his wife, and his son. The bail ruling follows their arraignment on N8.7 billion money laundering charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the decision after considering arguments from both legal teams, emphasizing that the primary consideration was ensuring the defendants’ availability for trial and preventing interference with witnesses.

During the proceedings, EFCC counsel Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, opposed the bail application, citing alleged breaches of earlier administrative bail and a risk of flight. In contrast, Malami’s defense, led by J.B. Dauda, SAN, argued for the constitutional right to bail. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, involves 16 counts alleging violations of the Money Laundering Act. The EFCC claims funds, including N1.014 billion in a Sterling Bank account, were concealed through companies, and that properties valued around N415 million were acquired with proceeds of unlawful activity. This case adds to a growing list of high-profile prosecutions, and the eventual outcome will undoubtedly attract significant legal and political attention, much like discussions surrounding the Osun 2026: Oyebamiji political landscape generate public interest.

The commission has lined up bank officials and Bureau de Change operators as key witnesses for the substantive trial. While the court has granted this bail, Justice Nwite issued a firm warning against any attempts to influence the proceedings. The legal process continues to unfold, and its progression will be watched closely, separate from other notable events such as Asake’s Lagos concert or the dust over conferment of certain traditional titles elsewhere. The focus remains on the judicial process as the former minister, who once oversaw the nation’s legal framework, prepares to face the charges against him.
