In a decisive enforcement action underscoring its regulatory mandate, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit, substandard, and unwholesome products valued at over Nine Hundred and Thirty-Nine Million Naira (N939 million). The public destruction exercise was conducted at the Anambra State Waste Management dumpsite in Awka, under the strict supervision of agency officials.

The operation, part of NAFDAC’s sustained campaign to sanitize the nation’s markets, targeted unsafe, expired, and falsified goods seized from across the South-East geopolitical zone. The destroyed inventory comprised a wide range of hazardous items, including medicines, food products, cosmetics, and medical equipment. The agency emphasized that such products pose severe public health risks, ranging from treatment failure and food-borne diseases to fatal outcomes.

Representing the Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Agency’s Director in the South-East, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, reiterated NAFDAC’s zero-tolerance policy towards the distribution of illicit products. He stated that the enforcement action reflects the agency’s unwavering commitment to consumer safety, which remains its top priority. The seizures were achieved through coordinated efforts involving routine surveillance, intelligence-led interventions, and targeted enforcement operations within the region.

This crackdown in Anambra aligns with broader national efforts to safeguard public health. It follows other significant actions, including the identification of Eziukwu Market in Aba as a major hub for counterfeit goods and the destruction of over N15 billion worth of substandard medical products in Ibadan. As NAFDAC intensifies its nationwide fight, the public is strongly advised to purchase only items with valid NAFDAC registration numbers and to report any suspicious products or activities to the agency.

These rigorous enforcement activities occur within a broader regulatory landscape where oversight remains crucial. Just as the Senate probes utilisation of public funds and the SEC targets civil service pension reforms, NAFDAC’s vigilant operations highlight the ongoing institutional efforts to ensure compliance and safety across critical sectors. Meanwhile, as Lagos announces Lekki-Ajah infrastructure projects to support community growth, the focus on foundational public health security through actions like this drug destruction remains paramount for national well-being.
