The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo State has announced a significant operational milestone, arresting 104 suspected traffickers and seizing illicit substances valued at over N1.8 billion. State Commander Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju presented the first-quarter 2026 scorecard in Benin, detailing the outcomes of intelligence-led operations conducted between January and March.
The command’s intensified enforcement efforts, aimed at dismantling drug distribution networks, led to the apprehension of 71 male and 33 female suspects during coordinated raids. Cannabis constituted the overwhelming majority of the seized drugs, with authorities recovering more than 18,000 kilogrammes. This decisive action underscores why bandits are finding it increasingly difficult to operate with impunity in the region, as the NDLEA sends a clear warning that Edo is no longer a safe haven for illicit activities.
Beyond arrests and seizures, the agency secured 36 convictions at the Federal High Court in Benin, demonstrating a strong legal follow-through. In line with a dual focus on justice and recovery, the command also expanded its non-enforcement strategy, successfully rehabilitating 28 individuals and providing counselling to 66 others. This holistic approach mirrors a broader national crackdown, which has seen major interdictions at seaports and the dismantling of sophisticated cartels.
This development is part of a wider national offensive against narcotics, following other high-profile operations such as a major opioid cartel bust in Lagos. The NDLEA’s sustained campaign highlights a concerted effort to target trafficking infrastructure while offering pathways to recovery, a strategy as critical as addressing other complex challenges like alleged property fraud. The resolve shown by the Edo command sets a formidable precedent for ongoing national efforts to curb the drug trade.
