The Nigerian cinema industry has commenced 2026 with remarkable vigor, posting its highest first-quarter admissions in six years. Official data released on April 5, 2026, reveals that total ticket sales for Q1 2026 reached 752,136, signaling a robust and sustained recovery in theatrical demand and underscoring the growing dominance of Nollywood productions on home soil.

This performance represents a significant 13.7% increase from the 661,720 admissions recorded in Q1 2025 and marks a decisive rebound from the softer figures observed in the immediate preceding years. The current growth trajectory is best understood in a historical context: after admissions held steady around 709,000 in Q1 2021 and 2022, a sharp decline followed in 2023 and 2024. The recovery initiated in 2025 has now accelerated, firmly positioning the industry on a promising path. This positive trend suggests the sector is rooted in a stronger foundation for future expansion, as it continues to demonstrate resilience and audience appeal.

The box office resurgence has been driven largely by the exceptional theatrical runs of major local titles. Films such as “Behind The Scenes” and “Oversabi Aunty” delivered standout performances, drawing significant audience turnout across the nation’s major cinema circuits. The commercial success of these films has been staggering; “Oversabi Aunty” crossed the N1 billion mark at the domestic box office, while “Behind The Scenes” has reportedly grossed an estimated N2.7 billion since its release. This success reinforces the creators’ status as bankable figures within a flourishing creative economy.

Notably, while admissions growth is strong, box office revenue is expanding at an even faster pace. Gross revenue leaped from N7.36 billion in 2023 to N11.58 billion in 2024, before surging 28% to N15.64 billion in 2025. This financial momentum highlights the increasing commercial viability of Nigerian cinema. As the industry capitalizes on this momentum, the narrative of a vibrant cultural sector continues to unfold, demonstrating how local storytelling can achieve monumental commercial success and captivate national audiences.
