The State of Health Tech in Nigeria, a report about the health tech businesses challenging the nation’s healthcare problems, was officially unveiled at TC Townhall: The State of Health Tech in Nigeria. The report takes a look at 75 startups, operating across 12 subsectors, with solutions ranging from diagnostics to telemedicine, the amount of capital raised in the sector, and opportunities available in the space.
The event was presented by Dr. Fara Olayanju and Dr. Wale Adeosun, who are both health management consultants. Olayanju started by describing the poor condition of Nigeria’s healthcare system using two examples, Sola, a child born in Nigeria, and Tommy, a child born in the West, to highlight the disparity in child mortality and care. Adeosun reinforced Olayanju’s introduction by sharing Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate, which is more than 800 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Olayanju then proceeded to mention that Nigerian health tech startups have raised a little under $8 million dollars within the last 15 years that the sector has existed. After that, she listed the 12 subsectors that were identified in TechCabal’s health tech report. Next, Adeosun took over to show the audience a launch timeline of the 75 health tech startups in addition to the 14 that are no longer operating. The duo further spoke about the professional backgrounds of founders, the location of startups across Nigeria, the type of capital startups have received, investors and the top 10 funded startups.
The doctors concluded their presentation with information regarding the regulatory environment of health tech in Nigeria, challenges and opportunities in the sector and recommendations for entrepreneurs.
