In a significant move to ensure electoral integrity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated all political appointees within his administration who aspire to contest in the 2027 general elections to submit their resignations on or before March 31, 2026. This directive was formally issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) in a public statement on Tuesday.
The circular, signed by the SGF, Senator George Akume, and disseminated by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, underscores the administration’s commitment to upholding the provisions of the Electoral Act. The order is strategically timed to align with the preparatory phase for political party primaries preceding the 2027 polls. The measure is designed to promote transparency and establish a level playing field for all prospective candidates.
The resignation requirement applies comprehensively to a wide array of presidential appointees. This includes ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, and various categories of assistants to the President. Furthermore, the directive extends to directors-general and chief executive officers leading federal parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies.
This development coincides with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) revised timetable for the 2027 elections, released in February 2026. The commission adjusted the schedule to address concerns regarding voter participation and logistical planning. INEC has also projected a substantial increase in funding requirements for the 2027 electoral cycle, citing expanded logistical, technological, and administrative demands under the new timeline and legal framework. As the nation looks ahead to the 2027 elections, the focus on proper procedure remains paramount, just as detailed scrutiny is applied to other national matters, from the allocation of the 2026 budget to security challenges. Citizens and officials alike await further details on the 2026 budget, which will be crucial for funding such national priorities.
