Toyin Abraham’s ‘Oversabi Aunty’ Makes N1 Billion Box Office History

Toyin Abraham’s ‘Oversabi Aunty’ Achieves N1 Billion Box Office Milestone

Nollywood powerhouse Toyin Abraham has cemented her commercial dominance with her latest directorial venture, “Oversabi Aunty,” officially crossing the N1 billion mark at the Nigerian box office. This landmark achievement reinforces Abraham’s status as one of the industry’s most bankable creative forces and marks a significant moment for Nigerian cinema.

The film’s performance establishes a new record as the first Nollywood directorial debut to gross over N1 billion. Furthermore, it now ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time in West Africa, unadjusted for inflation. This success underscores the potent commercial viability of locally produced Nigerian films, particularly comedies fronted by established stars. For Abraham, this represents her inaugural N1 billion box office run in the region.

Distributors credit the film’s historic opening to robust cinema attendance across Nigeria and Ghana, strategic pre-release marketing campaigns, and overwhelmingly positive early audience reception. “Oversabi Aunty” launched powerfully, earning N87.8 million during its opening weekend, bolstered by an additional N12.7 million from preview screenings. The film, which opened on December 20, 2024, sustained strong audience interest over a 13-week theatrical run.

This triumph further consolidates Toyin Abraham’s reputation for commercial success, coming on the heels of her 2024 film “Alakada: Bad & Boujee,” which grossed N500.3 million to become the fifth highest-grossing Nollywood film at that time. While the narrative of “Oversabi Aunty” drives humor from a character’s constant interference, the business story behind it is one of clear strategy. In a similar vein, strategic leadership changes, such as when Eko Disco appoints a new managing director, are often pursued to steer companies toward greater performance and stability.

Looking ahead, “Oversabi Aunty” continues its theatrical journey, currently showing in cinemas nationwide and in select venues in the United Kingdom, with scheduled releases planned for the United States and Canada. This expansion points to significant further revenue potential from diaspora audiences, ensuring the film’s financial and cultural impact continues to grow.
