Geoffrey Hinton, renowned AI expert and former Google employee, recently expressed his concerns about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) in an interview with Reuters. Hinton’s departure from Google, which he announced in an interview with the New York Times, has given him the freedom to openly discuss his worries about AI without impacting Google’s reputation.

Hinton drew attention to the urgency of addressing the risks associated with AI, stating that while climate change is a significant concern, the challenges posed by AI may be even more pressing. Unlike climate change, where a clear solution exists in reducing carbon emissions, Hinton noted that finding effective measures to address the potential risks of AI is far from straightforward.

The comments made by Hinton come at a time when tech giants are fiercely competing to advance their AI capabilities. The success of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s language model, has fueled this race. Notably, Google recently launched its own chatbot named Bard, which received criticism from some Google employees who expressed concerns about the potential dangers associated with the technology.

Hinton’s primary worries regarding AI revolve around the dissemination of false information and the potential loss of jobs. Research conducted by Goldman Sachs has estimated that AI could have an impact on up to 300 million full-time jobs. In his interview with the New York Times, Hinton pondered whether it is already too late to implement the necessary safeguards to control the rapid progression of AI.

While acknowledging the responsibility shown by Google in handling AI, Hinton expressed concerns about the difficulty of preventing bad actors from exploiting AI for malicious purposes. He questioned whether it is possible to effectively regulate AI and mitigate its potential negative consequences.

As of now, Google has not responded to requests for comment on Hinton’s remarks.
