The Nigerian box office witnessed a notable performance over the weekend of May 29 to 31, 2026, as the Nollywood family drama “Ajosepo: The Gathering” debuted with a total gross of N49.1 million. The film secured the second position on the box office chart, trailing behind the leading title “Call of My Life,” which earned N88.6 million for the weekend and accumulated N396.1 million over three weeks in cinemas.

According to Nigerian box office tracking data, “Ajosepo: The Gathering” recorded N41.3 million in its opening weekend alone. Directed by Kayode Kasum, the film features an ensemble cast including Bolaji Ogunmola, Mercy Aigbe, Mike Afolarin, Timini Egbuson, Tomike Adeoye, and Toyin Abraham. With a runtime of 1 hour and 50 minutes, the movie blends comedy and drama within a wedding-centered family conflict narrative.

Despite its strong opening, the film trails behind several long-running titles that continue to dominate the box office. “Michael” maintained an impressive run with N33.2 million for the weekend and a cumulative N691.6 million after six weeks. Meanwhile, “Mortal Kombat 2” added N15.1 million to reach N200.9 million in its fourth week. Other titles in the top 10 include “The Boy Who Gave,” “Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu,” “Efunroye,” “Okanjuwa,” “Passenger,” and “Jayeola Monje: The Anniversary,” each contributing modest weekly earnings across multiple screens.

Produced by Bolaji Ogunmola alongside Feyifunmi Oginni and Barbara Babarinsa, “Ajosepo” is part of a growing wave of ensemble-driven Nollywood productions targeting both domestic and diaspora audiences through theatrical releases. The film also continues a notable trajectory for director Kayode Kasum, whose projects have consistently performed strongly at the Nigerian box office. His previous works have reportedly crossed significant commercial milestones, including cumulative franchise earnings exceeding N1 billion across multiple releases.

Set around a high-profile Yoruba wedding, the story follows two families attempting to reconcile past scandals while navigating present tensions, romantic conflict, and generational disputes. As relationships strain under cultural expectations and unresolved grievances, the film explores themes of honesty, commitment, and family reputation in modern Nigerian society. The movie premiered across major cinema chains including Silverbird Cinemas locations in Lagos, Abuja, and Ghana, West Hills Mall, Accra Mall, Galaxy Mall Kaduna, Jabi Lake Mall Abuja, and Ikeja City Mall.
