The Oyo State Police Command has intensified security operations across the state through coordinated raids, stop-and-search exercises, and intelligence-led patrols. This initiative, announced in a statement on Thursday, June 5, 2026, by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, aims to strengthen public safety and combat criminal activities. The measures come amid heightened concerns following the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo communities over two weeks ago.

The police confirmed that these operations will be sustained as part of a broader strategy to curb crime and improve security visibility. Personnel have been strategically deployed to ensure faster response times to threats. The statewide enforcement also targets unmarked vehicles, fake or obscured number plates, and unauthorized plate coverings. The command assured that all activities will be conducted professionally, lawfully, and with full respect for human rights.

Oyo State has remained under scrutiny since May 15, when armed men attacked three schools in Ahoro Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. In response, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo directed public school teachers to withdraw services from June 1, while protests demanding the victims’ release have occurred across Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos states. The police command dismissed recent reports claiming the abducted pupils and teachers had been released, describing such claims as false and misleading, and confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing.

Following the abduction, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deployed top security chiefs to Oyo State and approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to support security operations. A federal delegation led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the Chief of Defence Staff visited affected communities on May 31 to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts. The Presidency has directed intensified rescue operations, with considerations ongoing for the establishment of a militarized presence. Meanwhile, discussions around broader security reforms, including the potential for a Nigeria State Police, continue to gain traction in policy circles. In related economic developments, the Naira Strengthens Below key thresholds against major currencies, while the Dangote Refinery Surpasses production targets, though Shell Executives Ignored earlier warnings about operational risks in the region. These factors collectively underscore the complex security and economic landscape facing the nation.
