The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated ₦700 billion from the Federation Account for the nationwide free distribution of electricity meters. This initiative aims to address the persistent issue of estimated billing and improve power access for Nigerian households and businesses. The funds are part of efforts to enhance transparency in billing, reduce electricity theft, and encourage more accurate energy consumption data.

The program is expected to help millions of Nigerians who previously lacked access to prepaid meters, a crucial step toward boosting consumer trust in the power sector. By bridging the metering gap, this initiative aligns with ongoing power sector reforms aimed at attracting investments and ensuring equitable energy distribution.

Stakeholders, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), have emphasized the importance of efficient implementation and proper monitoring to ensure that the meters reach their intended beneficiaries. This development also supports the government’s broader agenda of improving electricity infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
